April 10 – April 28 At-A-Glance

April 25 – AARP Smart Driver Course, 12:30-5pm at the Community Room, Mt. Shavano Manor, 525 W. 16th St. in Salida. The course costs $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers.  Class size is limited to 20.  Preregistration at the front desk at the Aquatic Center or by calling 539-6738.  Walk-in’s may register at the door if space is available.

April 25 – LAST DAY for Kayak Roll sessions 7-9pm, $8 per person, ages 10+, children under 10 cannot be in the water.  Instruction and equipment are not provided, PDF’s and helmets required.  Pool will be closed to the public beginning at 6:45pm.

April 26 – APRIL TRAVELOGUE! Join Salida Recreation at the Salida Steamplant, Wednesday, April 26 from 7-8:30pm for the  April travelogue featuring Karen Karnuta and her experience cycling the Silk Road from Europe to Asia. . Cost is $5/person and a cash bar is available with beer, wine and soft drinks.  Doors open at 6:30pm.

April 26 & 28 – Functional Inspired Kettlebell Training, Wednesdays & Fridays, 9-10am, Centennial Park, $10 drop-in fee, certified instructor, Kristina Pesch.  Basics of kettlebell strength training with an emphasis on safety, proper technique and form.

April 27 – Cakes and Cocktails II – CANCELLED due to low enrollment.

April 28 – LAST CAMP Friday for the school year, 9am-2pm, $5, ages 5-8. Join GUIDESTONE for Cold Weather Crop Planting. Let’s get some seeds in the ground! Join us as we help grow food for your school garden!  Join CSU Extension 4H after lunch for Storm the Castle – Try your hand as a medieval architect and engineer as you guild a castle, construct a catapult or trebuchet, and then get ready…aim…storm your neighbor’s castle! DROP OFF AT HOLMAN GARDEN. PICK UP AT CENTENNIAL PARK.

April 30 – Fitness on Skates with Salida Recreation and Ark Valley High Rollers, Sundays through May 21, 3 to 4pm coached workout at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds, $5 drop-in fee, all abilities ages welcome, 14 and under accompanied by an adult, skates and protective gear required and available to borrow.

May 8 through 13 – SPRING POOL CLOSURE! The Hot Springs Aquatic Center will be closed Monday, May 8 through Saturday, May 13 for our annual spring clean-up. We will re-open on Mother’s Day, May 14 from noon to 6pm.  Mother’s swim FREE that day (must attend with a child to receive the discount).

May 14 –  In celebration of Mother’s Day and our pool re-opening after a week-long closure, all mothers are invited to swim FREE in the public pools today. We will be open from noon to 6pm. Mother’s must attend with a child to receive the discount.

May 19 – Jive & Dive middle school only pool party, 7-9pm, $5 drop-in fee. Pool will be closed to the public beginning at 6:45pm.

May 21 – Touch a Truck and Plant Sale, 10am-noon, East parking lot of the Aquatic Center. This is a FREE community event. The plant sale will benefit Salida Montessori Charter School and Children’s Discovery Ranch.

May 27 – Loyal Duke’s Canine Companion Run, 9am Start. Salida Recreation and the members of Friends of Loyal Duke and the Salida Dog Club are bringing back a popular event we have not seen in four years! This is a 5K Fun Run/Walk for dogs; must be attached by leash to a human. Preregistration by 5/26, $30; Race day registration is $35. Check-in begins at 8am at Loyal Duke’s Dog Park, where the race will both begin and end.

May 30 through June 1 – AMERICAN RED CROSS BABYSITTING 101 CLASS! This 16 hour Red Cross training course is for girls and boys ages 11-15 and includes pediatric CPR and basic first aid certification. Fee includes instruction, certification and printed materials. Classes scheduled for Tues, 5/30, Wed, 5/31 and Thurs, 6/1, 9am to 4pm each day, Room 189 of the Touber Building. Cost is $100 (scholarships available). Registration deadline is May 19.  Class is limited to 10 students
