Due to low clouds, heavy snow, and poor visibility, race leaders became disoriented in whiteout conditions crossing the lake ice 2.5 miles into When they did see land they went for it, and most participants followed. They ended up on the wrong shore of the lake and then decided course in reverse. This resulted in some general confusion and various routes/distances being followed by different runners.
