Welcome to Salida Recreation’s 2015 Fitness Challenge! This is our 5th year of dedicating much of our January and February programming to the Fitness Challenge. After attending the Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL) Summit in Golden this October, we’re more excited than ever to support your health, fitness and wellness goals. Although we certainly support these goals throughout the entire year, we also understand the importance of having a time and place to start in your effort to making small (or large!) steps and changes in your lifestyle.
During the fitness challenge we work with various organizations in Salida to provide structured free or low cost classes or seminars for you to try. These classes or seminars, encompassing health, fitness and nutrition over 9 weeks, are designed to introduce participants to many different health and wellness opportunities in Salida, and to hopefully help make positive changes that will last throughout the year and beyond. Although the Fitness Challenge was originally intended for adults, we expanded this concept last year to include a Kids Fitness Challenge. We are now very excited to be able to offer programs for kids and adults alike.
For further motivation, consider this – according to the CDC, regular physical activity can help:
- Control your weight
- Reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease
- Reduce your risk for type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome
- Reduce your risk of some cancers
- Strengthen your bones and muscles
- Improve your mental health and mood
- Improve your ability to do daily activities and prevent falls, if you’re an older adult
- Increase your chances of living longer
Although not necessary to participate in any of our scheduled events, we offer participants the chance to keep a fitness log and earn prizes from local businesses. The 2015 Fitness Challenge will again begin with the New Year’s Day 5K Fun Run/Walk. We had over 100 participate last year, and are looking forward to this year’s event, no matter what kind of weather we might encounter!
