Earth Day Celebrations & Events
Join Salida Recreation & Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area in celebrating Earth Day 2012! Pick & choose events, or come for the whole program. Saturday, April 21st, 10:00 am – 2:30 pm in the Scout Hut at Riverside Park.
Electronics Recycling, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Most electronics carry toxic substances that can leach into groundwater if tossed into a landfill, & recycling the trace amounts of elemental material found in electronics helps reduce need for mining. Metech Recycling of Denver will be collecting everything from batteries to computer monitors, so take advantage of this special opportunity for safe, ethical, & secure recycling. Small fees are applicable to certain items. See here for a listing of fees.
Earth’s Own Recyclers: Worms, 10:00 am – 10:50 pm
Worms take our organic waste & turn it back into healthy & nutritious soil! This reduces wet garbage in your trash can & provides your garden with fertilizer. Learn how to build a worm bin & get a close up look at these hard-working creatures!
Raptor Center: Live Birds! 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
The Nature & Raptor Center of Pueblo is a wildlife rehabilitation facility that specializes in birds of prey. Each year more than 250 injured & orphaned birds of prey are admitted to the facility from across southeastern Colorado. Half of these birds will be returned, but a few remain at the center due to permanent disabilities. These “resident raptors” assist with educational efforts, helping us to understand how humans are a part of the natural environment, not separate.
Plastic recycling Q & A along with Kid’s Activities, 12:30 – 1:30 pm
Ever wonder why there are so many different types of plastics, or why they need to go into separate recycling bins? Learn the ins and out of recycling plastics with Angel of Shavano Recycling. Kid’s fun & educational activities will run concurrently so adults can learn while kids play (& learn!).
Human Impact in Shagrila 1:30 – 2:30 pm
Masood Ahmad of Adams State College will lead this discussion & presentation about environmental issues affecting the ecology of the world’s highest mountains. Masood will speak about his native Pakistan, home to the largest concentration of the world’s highest peaks. Learn about glaciers, militarization, hunting, conservation, ecological education, & tourism—Pakistan may be a world away, but these issues are very relevant to citizens of Chaffee County! ______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Clean Up Green Up
Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area wants you to come out in full-force to beautify the unique river valley in which we live & recreate. Cleaning up provides a safer, healthier, &more beautiful environment for wildlife and people. Waterfowl can get tangled up in fishing line, hooks and bobbers, which can be fatal to them. We also encourage people to Cleanup & Greenup throughout the year by recycling & picking up litter. Call Rose at AHRA, 539-7289, for info.
Saturday, May 19th, Register at AHRA headquarters on Sackett St between 8:30 – 9:30. Picnic begins at 11:30 at Riverside Park.
