Kid’s Connection

March 30, 2012

April marks an action-packed month for the Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center. Read on to learn about tons fun activities and swim lessons for kids aged 6 months on up—plus fitness classes for adults to enable you to keep up with your child’s energy!

This Friday, April 6th, join the Underwater Egg Hunt! Keep your eyes out for the golden eggs to win a prize! Eggs will be sunk in the pool for retrieval by eager swimmers. This year, we will run the hunt in smaller heats of kids so that everyone has a chance to find eggs and stay safe. The youngest kids will begin at 1:15, with older kids to follow. There will be goodies for all. (All ages, 1 – 3 pm, $3.)

Beginning Saturday, April 7th, parents can start the process of introducing their kids ages 6 months to 3 years of age to the water with our popular Parent-Tot Swim Lesson series. This 4 week series (9:00 – 9:45 April 7, 14, 21, & 28) is a great bonding activity for you and your child. Techniques you will learn in the class will set the stage for a lifelong love of water and enable your child to more easily learn to swim once they are a little older. ($30/4 lessons, register at the pool or call 539-6738.)

Don’t forget, the Hot Springs Pool also offers Parent Tot Swim time Monday thru Saturday, 10:00 am – noon, another great time to splash around with your little one and socialize with other families.

Friday, April 27th will host a Kid’s Pool Party from 1 – 4 pm, and Jive and Dive from 7 – 9 pm.  At the Kid’s Party, we bring out toys, arrange games, and let the kids take over the pool! A light snack will also be served. $5 includes all-day admission.

Jive and Dive is the pool party for middle-schoolers only—no adults allowed! This is the last Jive and Dive of the 2011-2012 school year, so don’t miss out! We’ll have a limbo contest, a hula hoop competition, and root beer floats! As always, you are welcome to bring your own music, or request any song you like. $5 at the door.

Also happening this month at the pool will be Longfellow swim lessons. Instead of their regular gym class, the kids will come to the pool for lessons Monday – Thursday, April 2 – May 2. The pool will be a little busier than normal during these times (8:30 – 11:45 am, and 1:00 – 2:50 pm), so we thank you for understanding as we share the pool with this next generation of swimmers!

Finally, if you, the adult, find yourself in need of some recharging, visit our webpage to find a fitness class to blow off some steam and give yourself a well-deserved break! See here for a complete schedule. And, mark your calendars for April 21st, when we celebrate Earth Day with electronic recycling and great events for kids and adults at the Scout Hut. See here for more information.

“Thursdays at Six” summer concert series

March 9, 2012

Salida Recreation and Go-To Guide are proud to announce the return to Riverside Park of “Thursdays at Six”, a series of free outdoor concerts throughout the summer. The series highlights area musicians and provides weekly entertainment in downtown Salida for locals and visitors alike.

Salida Recreation is currently seeking submissions from bands or solo musicians interested in participating in this series. Compensation will be negotiated based on a range of factors, not to exceed $300 per 2 hour performance.

If you are interested in taking part in this new summer tradition, please submit either a recording or a link to a recording to Maggie Murdoch at the Salida Hot Springs Pool or salidarecreation@yahoo.com. Questions can also be directed to Maggie Murdoch at 539-5703.

Sponsorship opportunities are also available to help provide amplified sound equipment and publicity. If you or your business is interested in becoming a sponsor, please visit www.SalidaRec.com/music or contact Maggie to review sponsorship packages.

Last year, “Thursdays at Six”, sponsored by Salida Recreation and Go-To Guide Telephone Directory, entertained people on 5 nights during June, July, and August. Donations collected for local charities totaled over $500. This year, we are aiming to increase the number of performances, but we need help from the community to do so. Money raised from donations gathered during the summer of 2012 will support the Salida Recreation Scholarship program.

The Salida Recreation Scholarship program will be a fund used solely to assist local children, adults, and families—who otherwise would be restricted by cost—participate in programs, class, and memberships offered by Salida Recreation or Salida Hot Springs Pool. The fund, which will be made available in fall of 2012, fits with our mission to provide low-cost, healthy, and fun activities to citizens of Chaffee County.

The Scholarship Programs hopes to launch in fall, 2012, with details will be made available in late summer of early fall.

Questions about this fund can be directed to Maggie at the contact information above.

2012 Fitness Challenge Winners!

After two months of hard work on behalf of Fitness Challenge participants, the results are finally in and Salida Recreation is proud to announce the four winners of the 2012 Fitness Log Challenge! Participants earned points for tracking workouts, attending seminars or preventative screenings, and more.

The 2 month Fitness Challenge took place during January and February, and included the New Year’s Day 5K Walk/Run, free weekly workouts, free weekly health and nutrition seminars, a pair of cooking classes, and discounted workouts from Salida Recreation and Hot Springs Aquatic Center. This year’s Challenge was the second annual, and expanded upon 2011’s Challenge.

After gathering logs, Salida Recreation drew a name from all the logs turned in to determine one winner, and also awarded prizes to the top three point scorers.

The winner of the random drawing of all participants with over 15 points is Christa Bottorff, who wins a selection of yoga props from Salida Yoga Center.

In 3rd place, with 132 points, is Jenny Majeski, who wins a 2 person pass to the private soaking pools at Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center.

Coming in 2nd place, with 159 points, is Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center’s own Mary Baranczyk, who wins a $25 gift certificate to Simple Foods and a free Zumba pass.

And the overall, 1st place winner, with 166 points, is Carrie Smith! Carrie wins a one hour private training session at the Pilates Studio, and two free Zumba passes!

Nice job to everyone who participated–lots of impressive logs were turned in! To say thanks to everyone who participated, Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center will also award everyone who turned a log in, but did not win another prize, a 1 day pass to the public pools.

Prizes are available for pick up from the front desk at the pool.

A big thank you to all of the sponsors of the 2012 Salida Recreation Fitness Challenge: LiveWell Chaffee County, Salida Hot Springs Aquatic Center, Salida Yoga Center, Suzann Simpson (kickboxing instructor and personal trainer), The Pilates Studio, Curves Gym, Ploughboy Market, Amanda Wright (Zumba® instructor), and Simple Foods Market. Your contributions made the Fitness Challenge possible.
