Salida Recreation is excited to announce that pickleball play will continue at the Chaffee County Fairgrounds Exhibition Center. The County Commissioners granted the pickleball group, which has held weekly open play at the Fairgrounds for the last 4 months, an additional 12 months of playing time for a reduced rent. They also allowed the group to add an additional day of playing time.
In addition to Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 8:30 – 11:30 am, open playtime will be held on Wednesdays from 5 – 7 pm. Equipment is provided—just wear tennis shoes and be prepared to have fun! The fee is $5.
If you don’t know what pickleball is, think of it as a cross between tennis and ping pong. It is less physically demanding than tennis because it is played on a smaller court using wooden paddles and a whiffle ball. However, it still offers a fun challenge to eye hand coordination and provides great exercise.
Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the nation, attracting everyone from children to seniors on to the court.
With the addition of Wednesday evenings, Salida Recreation hopes to bring in more people, including youth and working adults. Wednesday’s time will be an all-levels open playtime. More advanced players are invited to play Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 – 10:00 am, and beginning players are invited Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:00 – 11:30 am.
The only exceptions to this schedule are when a full-paying renter is using the Exhibition Center. The official calendar for pickleball can be found at www.salidarec.com/recreation-calendar.
